چکیده

Recently HZB proposed an upgrade of the 3 generation synchrotron light source BESSY II allowing simultaneous long and short pulse operation [1]. For this scheme superconducting higher harmonic cavities of the fundamental 500MHz at two frequencies need to be installed in the BESSY II storage ring. Given an appropriate choice of the higher harmonics the resulting gradient leads to a beating effect of the effective longitudinal focusing voltage at the stable fix points resulting in different bunch lengths in subsequent buckets. This project places stringent requirements on the cavity performance, as high accelerating fields, excellent HOM damping capabilities and high reliability as they will operate in a 300 mA 24/7 user facility. In this paper we describe the requirements for the cavity design and first design steps.

Bessy Vsr 1.5 Ghz Cavity Design and Considerations on Waveguide Damping

The BESSY VSR upgrade of the BESSY II light source [1] represents a novel approach to simultaneously store long (ca. 15ps) and short (ca. 1.5ps) bunches in the storage ring with the “standard” user optics. To this end, new high-voltage L-Band superconducting multi-cell cavities must be installed in one of the straights of the ring. These 1.5 GHz and 1.75 GHz cavities are based on 1.3 GHz system...

The Variable pulse length Storage Ring (BESSY VSR) upgrade to BESSY II at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB)

The Variable pulse length Storage Ring (BESSY VSR) upgrade to BESSY II at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) requires an upgrade on the RF systems in the form of highvoltage longitudinally focusing super conducting RF cavities of 1.5GHz and 1.75GHz. Coaxial RF power couplers capable of handling 13 kW peak power at standing wave operation, are required to provide an average power of 1.5 kW for both ...

Orbit Measurements at the Bessy Ii Booster in Preparation for Quasi-low Alpha Operation

Diagnostic refurbishments are ongoing at the booster synchrotron in preparation for the near future Variable pulse Storage Ring (VSR) project at BESSY II. Essential orbit measurements have been re-installed after almost two decades of latency. This diagnostic will help assess the effectiveness of possible upgrade scenarios such as quasi-low alpha operation and extraction optimization. The contr...

Bessy Vsr: a Novel Application of Srf for Synchrotron Light Sources

CW SRF Cavities have been used very successfully in the past in synchrotron light sources to provide high power acceleration. Here we present a novel application of higher harmonic systems of two different frequencies (1.5 GHz and 1.75 GHz) to generate a beating of accelerating voltage. With such a system it is possible to store "standard" (some 10 ps long) and "short" (ps and sub-ps long) puls...

Status and Prospects of the Bessy Ii Injector System

The BESSY II injector system consists of a 50MeV Linac, installed in preparation for TopUp operation, and a fastramping Booster synchrotron. The system provides injection efficiencies into the BESSY II Storage Ring well above 90%. This contribution reports on the present status, measurements of energy acceptance as well as studies on coupled bunch-by-bunch instability. Requirements for BESSY VS...
